Tennessee football vs. Florida: Score prediction, scouting report
The Gators have stumbled since their win over Utah in the opener with a loss to Kentucky and a close call against USF last week.
Momentum is on the Volunteer sideline thanks to a strong start, headlined by an overtime win at Pitt and easy victories against Ball State and Akron. Georgia is the clear favorite to win the East Division, but the battle to finish No. However, the last two weeks haven’t gone as well for the new staff. The Gators outgained Kentucky in the SEC opener for both teams but were unable to overcome a lackluster day through the air and a couple of turnovers in a loss. A week later, Napier’s team needed a missed field goal to escape USF Saturday marks Florida’s final game in the month of September, but getting to second in the East would be difficult with a loss to Tennessee after the earlier defeat to Kentucky.
Tennessee is for the first time since , but the schedule will get tougher as coach Josh Heupel’s team hits SEC play. After Saturday’s game, the Volunteers have an off week before a trip to Baton Rouge, followed by a home date versus Alabama. Florida has won 16 out of the last 17 against Tennessee.
Also, just five out of the matchups in that span were decided by one score. The Volunteers haven’t beaten the Gators in Knoxville since Kickoff: Saturday, Sept. The best defense against Tennessee’s high-powered attack might be Florida’s offense. The Gators have recorded or more rushing yards in two out of the three contests and rank second in the SEC in yards per carry 6.
And through three games, Florida is averaging just 58 plays a contest, which is the pace and style Napier’s team needs to play at on Saturday. Although time of possession is largely a meaningless stat, the best shot at a Gators’ victory is a low-possession game where the offense can chew up large chunks of time to keep Tennessee’s offense off the field.
In addition to Florida’s need to run the ball and keep the pace and tempo in its favor, the offense needs quarterback Anthony Richardson to be the Anthony Richardson the college football world saw in the season opener against Utah. The sophomore accounted for yards in Florida’s victory but has struggled the last two weeks. Against Kentucky, Richardson recorded just four rushing yards, tossed two interceptions, and completed only 14 of 35 passes.
A rebound performance was expected versus USF last week, but he connected on 10 of 18 throws for just yards. For Florida to win on Saturday, Richardson has to eliminate the mistakes through the air four picks over the last two games and factor prominently into the ground game. Although Richardson has to play better through the air, a lack of playmakers on the outside is another concern for Napier.
Arizona State transfer Ricky Pearsall seven rec. The Gators have not hit a pass play beyond 33 yards this year. Helping Richardson anchor the ground game is a trio of backs. Montrell Johnson paces the offense in carries 25 and yardage so far in , with Trevor Etienne and Nay’Quan Wright also in the mix. Tennessee has been tough against the run so far and ranks fourth in the SEC in yards allowed Ball State and Akron didn’t test the Volunteers much on the ground, while Pitt rushed for yards over 39 attempts.
Florida gashed this defense for yards 7. Tennessee’s defense allowed more than 30 points a game and struggled to stop the run But the Volunteers are off to a good start in ’22, limiting their first three opponents to 4. Between the firepower on Tennessee’s sideline and Florida’s strength on offense the backfield and Richardson’s mobility , stopping the run and forcing the Gators to win this one on passing downs is the formula for success.
While Florida wants to play with a deliberate pace and control the time of possession, the opposite is true on the Tennessee sideline. Under Heupel, the Volunteers averaged 73 plays a game last season and are at 78 through three games in ‘ Not only is the pace high, but Tennessee keeps the scoreboard operator in Neyland Stadium busy.
This offense ranks third in the SEC in yards per play 7. Quarterback Hendon Hooker makes Tennessee’s offense go and has been locked in through the first three games. The senior is completing nearly 70 percent of his throws Also, Hooker has scored two times on the ground and leads all SEC signal-callers with five connections of plus yards. In last year’s game against Florida, Hooker in just his second start with the Volunteers , completed 13 of 23 passes for yards and two scores.
Hooker will be the best quarterback Florida’s defense has faced in ’22, but the secondary has held up well against Kentucky’s Will Levis yards and Utah’s Cameron Rising The Gators have allowed only two passing touchdowns in ’22 and are limiting quarterbacks to just 6.
Adding to coordinator Patrick Toney’s concerns about slowing Tennessee’s attack is the potential absence of linebacker Ventrell Miller listed as questionable due to injury. How effective Florida’s pass rush would be was a question mark coming into ’22 and this group has registered just three sacks so far. In order to slow down Tennessee, the Gators will either have to bend a little in the secondary or pressure Hooker in hopes the senior will get rid of the ball quicker and limit the downfield shots.
Hooker’s supporting cast at receiver is up in the air due to an ankle injury to No. The senior got hurt in last week’s win over Akron and is questionable to play. Assuming Tillman doesn’t go, Tennessee isn’t lacking options on the outside. Running back Jabari Small was also banged up in Tennessee’s win last week but seems on track to play. Jaylen Wright yards leads the team in rushing, with Small also likely to contribute against a Florida defense ranking 13th in the SEC against the run Although the Volunteers want to lean on the pass, there could be opportunities on the ground for Small and Wright.
Florida has dominated this series, but on paper, Tennessee is the better team going into Saturday’s game. Not only are the Volunteers a better team in , but the atmosphere in Knoxville is going to be raucous with a program desperate for a big win over a rival.
The best hope for a Gators’ upset rests with a strong rushing attack and a rebound performance by Richardson that controls the tempo and keeps the Volunteers on the sidelines. Heupel will counter with the opposite approach: Fast tempo and aim to get ahead early on the scoreboard to get Florida out of its comfort zone.
Outside of the rivalry history , there’s not much of a reason to pick the Gators here. Florida battles and keeps within striking distance, but it’s Tennessee’s time for a breakout win under Heupel. The Gators are also producing effectively on the ground on offense, averaging rushing yards per game. Florida has a balanced rushing attack with four players generating at least rushing yards in only three games, and the Gators are averaging 6. Florida also holds the edge in recent history against Tennessee. The Gators have won 16 of the last 17 meetings against the Vols, including the last four meetings.
In those last four games, Florida has scored at least 31 points each time, and Florida is outscoring Tennessee by more than 23 points per game while outgaining the Volunteers by more than yards per contest. Finally, the Gators could benefit from the absence of star Tennessee receiver Cedric Tillman. He left last week’s game with a lower-body injury, and Tennessee hasn’t provided an official update on his status for Saturday.
Though Florida has the recent success in the head-to-head series, Tennessee can benefit from the struggles of its opponent. The Gators have not won back-to-back games since the first two games of , and Florida is on a four-game road losing streak. Florida is also just against ranked opponents dating back to , and the Gators are struggling through the air on offense. Florida has the fewest passing yards and the worst completion rate of any SEC team this season, and Anthony Richardson has multiple interceptions in back-to-back games.
Richardson is also one of only four players in FBS with no touchdown passes and at least four interceptions. In addition, Florida has only 10 plays of at least 20 yards this season, which ties for the fewest among SEC teams with South Carolina. Tennessee’s offense currently sits atop the SEC in total offense, scoring offense and yards per pass attempt, with top-two marks in passing offense and rushing touchdowns.
The Vols also have the benefit of a raucous crowd at Neyland Stadium, and Tennessee is giving up only What Anthony Richardson shows up? The Gators’ quarterback has been up and down this season, but is still yet to establish himself as a competent thrower. Not ideal, especially as Florida seems to lack that real deep, perimeter threat to help him out. Still, AR is 3rd on the team in rushing, and leads that unit with 3 scores on the ground.
Vols will win if they can run. Balance this offense out, and Tennessee should take this one – comfortably. He’s dealing to a gifted receiving corps good for 15 ypc with 2 targets already over yards. UT lines up against a Florida defense that’s the SEC’s worst on 3rd down and has the backs to move the chains and keep the Gators off the field. Don’t expect another point game from the Vols, who teed off on the likes of Ball State and Akron.
These teams look nothing alike in any stat. What are you talking about?? UF is 96th in scoring offense. TN is 24th in scoring Defense. There is no way possible for UF to allow as many points as they have per game and hold TN under that, when TN has an offense this good. TN averaging 52 points per game, and that D ranking is going to be hard pressed to hold them under that. At lest to a good amount below that.
Not stats… Matchups. As in the uf dbs matchup well to your wrs. Uf front 7 matches up well to the UT OLine. This game will be determined by who can out-posess whom and that leans lizards. Sometimes in dark corners of Vegas, they have what is called, blind bet.
People whom are used to having money to bet but have no interest in any research for the bet they make. They believe that blind luck is better than any other way in order to win a bet. This is like in HS darkening answer dots on achievements tests to just get it over with. There are these for this game as well. The McElwain residue remains.. No reason to be sorry.
I believe it will be a close one also, and might possibly come down to whoever has the ball last. Really hoping we can get the W. I think this one is a hard one to pick. Looking at the stats and eye test, it seems obvious that the Vols will roll right over Florida. Yet history tells me the Gators find a way to win. This could be a wild game, or one fought in the trenches in a knock-out, drag-out brutal matchup, or one of the most boring games of the year for non-fans.
All this hype and being the favorite vs Florida is a tad worrysome to me. That said there may be a mental thing with the Vols about the Gators.
Napier has to love all the bulletin board material. One thing is for sure, the Gators will come in angry and disrespected. I think that would matter more if UF was a more settled team. Vols are clicking better. My mind says UT gets their wish. Torching Florida for passing and winning by 24 plus — in blowout fashion. It was like Georgia was playing against a ghost of passed dominance. Average Florida players would seem to always have their best game of the year, and somehow believe the results of past years would have a positive effect in their favor.
If Florida — Richardson starts fast and playing over their previous performances, look out. AR is having a Milton moment. Given our history, this will be the game he gets it together and hopefully we can get after him before he as a chance to cause any real damage. Hope nobody loses their homes over this game.
