Wales — the westernmost town in both Alaska and the U. Wales on the Bering Strait coast is starting to experience some flooding in low lying areas. Water levels will peak this afternoon with the high tide, then gradually fall through Sunday. Here are some photos from Wales taken by Joanne Keyes. Please stay safe out there.
Another town, Shaktoolik, reported coastal flooding, with water “entering the community and getting close to some homes,” according to the weather service. Residents there were evacuated to a school and clinic. Shaktoolik was also expected to see the worst of the storm later in the day.
According to the weather service , the water level in Nome rose above 10 feet Saturday, and is expected to continue to rise.
Landslide is a catch-all term that refers to mass movement of rock and soil on slopes that have become too steep to be stable. Stable slopes can become unstable with added groundwater pressure, which is why landslides often happen during or after heavy rainfall. Alaska’s climate and geology sets the landscape up for landslides.
Alaska has trigger mechanismsms, such as permafrost degradation, glacial retreat, earthquakes, and isostatic rebound uplift of the Earth’s crust after a heavy weight is removed. These trigger mechanisms can cause some unique types of landslides such as snow-ice-rock avalanches and frozen debris flows.
Collapse of hanging glaciers and rock-ice faces is most common in areas with glaciers and steep topography—frequently the same areas that attract tourists. These types of landslides are among the most dangerous to people and infrastructure. Alaska’s warming climate has already caused many areas to become unstable.
The force of the water moved some homes off their foundations, and one house in Nome floated down a river until it got caught at a bridge. The potent storm — what remains of Typhoon Merbok — has been influencing weather patterns as far away as California, where strong winds and a rare late-summer rainstorm were expected.
Officials had warned some places could see their worst flooding in 50 years and that the high waters could take up to 14 hours to recede. Mike Dunleavy issued a disaster declaration during the day. The nearly 1,mile 1,kilometer storm front has damaged roads and potentially other infrastructure, Dunleavy said at a Saturday evening news conference.
Officials will evaluate any effects on water and sewer systems, seawalls, fuel storage areas, airports, and ports. Federal Emergency Management Agency representatives were already in Alaska before the storm, and Dunleavy said they will stay to help assess damage. Among the hardest hit communities was Golovin, a village of or so residents who mostly sought shelter at a school or in three buildings on a hillside. The cascading crises up and down the western coast of the US come after scientists have warned for years that global heating will make Alaska more vulnerable to large non-tropical cyclones, even as it drives drier, hotter conditions that fuel damaging wildfires across the west.
Governor Dunleavy, who issued a disaster declaration on Saturday morning, said officials hoped to speed up recovery efforts before the region begins to freeze up in about three weeks. Time is of the essence, Dunleavy said on Sunday when pledging to get communities whole again as soon as possible.
Freeze-up, or the start of winter, can happen as early as October. Alaskans grapple with fallout from typhoon-related flooding.
