A case can be made for Gibbs, though. The junior from Dalton, Georgia, averaged 7. It was the kind of performance that will raise the antennas of voters who haven’t paid much attention to Gibbs this season. This game was one of the most highly anticipated matchups of the year.
For Gibbs to have that kind of performance considering the Tide’s offensive limitations is exactly what a running back needs to earn consideration. Every team — even a national title contender like Alabama — is allowed one mulligan. That was what a Week 2 win over Texas was for the Tide. Saturday’s game was the golf version of a shank to the right that hit a tree, bounced off the cart path and somehow landed on the green. Bama walked away with a win, but make no mistake, it’s headed into the danger zone.
What’s more problematic is that it could be doing it with Milroe, who didn’t exactly inspire confidence. The Volunteers scored on their first four possessions in Death Valley, just one game after going an entire 60 minutes without punting vs.
After all, the Aggies don’t exactly have one of the most potent offenses in the country. Tennessee does, and it plays so fast that it can turn a game sideways in a matter of minutes. Unless something miraculous happens between now and Saturday afternoon in Knoxville, Tennessee, that appears to be the case.
King was named the Aggies starting quarterback in fall camp in each of the last two years, but his career hasn’t exactly gone as planned.
Against Alabama, King played well enough behind a porous offensive line. He was noticeably limping on the final drive of the game but still managed to go 5 of 9 excluding a spike for 46 yards without having a timeout in his back pocket.
But he needed 46 passing attempts to achieve that yardage total and completed just 25 of them with two touchdowns and one interception. The Tide had over a dozen quarterback hurries in the game. Milroe was just of passing for yards and Alabama had to do most of its damage on the ground.
The game looked a lot like the matchup between the two teams did. The Aggies got a heroic performance from backup quarterback turned starter Zach Calzada a season ago as he was great over the final minutes of the game. Alabama fans are sure hoping that Young is healthy enough to return it what could be an epic matchup with Tennessee in a week. Alabama won that game in Knoxville as part of an ongoing game win streak in the series.
Nick Saban has never lost to Tennessee in his Alabama tenure. There are over a dozen teams that have legitimate hopes to make the College Football Playoff. After a loss to Texas, Oklahoma is in Big 12 play for the first time since Hart was carted off during the first quarter of Michigan’s game vs.
If you still had any doubts about the legitimacy of UCLA, those should be put to rest after a convincing win over Utah. It paid off by the slimmest margin. The opportunity was gone in an instant, a play call that everyone hated going awry and kept Alabama undefeated. Just barely. More from SI. Newsletters SI Showcase. SI Network. Alabama Fumbles.
