Traditional ball-and-paddle gameplay gets a twist in RockSolid Software’s Blast Thru. With a style similar to classics such as Breakout, the arcade-style action requires keeping a ball in play while moving a paddle back and forth across the bottom of the screen, as you aim at blocks of “bricks” that have a variety of power-up and destructive properties.

As a rule, all blue power-ups released by exploding bricks are helpful, but players must avoid the red-colored items, which make gameplay more difficult. For example, blue power-ups can increase the width of the paddle or add extra points to your score, while red items can make the entire block of bricks start descending down the screen, reduce paddle size, or end the level.

Options include single-player or team play with up to eight players, a choice of random levels or a specific level up to 40 , four difficulty settings easy, medium, hard, and very hard , music and sound volume, and a Hall of Fame list that tracks the top 20 scores. A level editor provides players with the opportunity to design their own boards.

That’s perfectly fine to kill off chore characters so that other characters can develop or so that you can drive the story in a particular direction. But killing him in the first part of the game, and then later forcing me to play as his killer in the hopes that I will start to like this character is such a flawed way of thinking and game developing.

In killing off Joel, you basically muted the players ability to relate to Abby. More on this in the character section. The first half of the game Ellie wasn’t bad. Hard to swallow that Joel is gone but I think they did a fair job otherwise in the first half.

Got a little bit of open world feel there and the story progression is good. The second half would have been great! You watch this character Abby go from being this cold, weirdly distant person who takes down Scars without compassion to slowly figuring out what it is to care for someone, to have people that depend on you, to fight for someone other than herself.

Unfortunately, the writers already poisoned me to this character with their terrible decision to kill Joel off in the opening of the game. Her character arc and story would have been fantastic. But it was all muted because I just watched her beat joel to death. Towards the end of the game, when you are playing as Abby and fighting Ellie, I found myself WANTING to lose. I want Ellie to blow her face off. This isn’t good writing when the person you are playing as doesn’t have the player’s routing interest.

Now I know if they had not done what they did to Joel, the story would have been completely different. They could not have had the whole revenge story of Ellie and would have had to figure out a different way to work in Abby. But nonetheless, it would have been a better decision than to kill off Joel and poison the player to half of the story.

I have a hard time grading this.. because so much of the story was good great even. But no matter how awesome Abby’s storyline was, I wanted her to die. I didn’t want her to succeed. And that makes the player not connect to the character and makes the story They didn’t make any huge changes to the first and that was a good thing. Same concept with the addition of leveling up your character with meds. Nice touch. There were a few negatives. Several times I found myself running in circles just waiting for the game to give me a hint..

only to find that the way out of an area was this little hidden hole. A couple of broken parts to the environment was annoying. More than once I found myself trying to move a cart that needed to be moved only to find it lodged up against a wall and I couldn’t move it. So it wasn’t perfect but honestly it was great. Let’s start with Abby and pretend for a second that she doesn’t murder joel. She is kind of the new Joel of this game. Like Joel in the first game, she starts off pretty unlikable.

She’s cold, hateful, ruthless. But as time goes, she starts questioning the wolves. She fights for these scars, avenges her friends, and learns to live for others. Great character arch. Great overall character. But you know why none of that mattered? Because the writers had her kill joel in the first 30 minutes of the game. At the end of the day she still murdered the character you loved in the first and keeps the player from really connecting as they should or as the writers clearly intended.

Ellie was a cold, shell of her former self. She’s been through a lot at this point but she wasn’t the funny cheerful girl from the first game. She’s another cold, distant , ruthless person who really doesn’t have much of a character arch. She’s cold, hateful, mean at the beginning. She’s cold, hateful, mean at the end. You do see at the very end that maybe she’s learned to move on?

But it may also be too late? She’s decent and you care and connect with her but honestly I think that is because of her story in the first game. Some of the side characters were good. Lev and Yara were interesting and decently well done. Jesse was forgettable. Tommy had a strange character arch I thought. At the beginning he was all like “No you need to stay here and let things go” and at the end he’s all “Let’s go get her!!

but he didn’t really add much or take away to the story overall. Unfortunately, some of the best characters of this game were the new ones. The old ones that you loved from the first were either killed or reduced to a shell of their former selves. Overall: 7. Not a terrible game. But not a great one like the first. The first was amazing. Excellent story. Excellent gameplay for it’s time. Amazing characters and character archs.

This one had excellent gameplay and a decent story and set of characters but because of some poor writing and the overall direction this game went, it failed to live up to the standard the first one set. I do hope there is a 3rd one.

connecting parts is very hard to do, they don’t always attach, is there a particular reason or trick to it? I have the same issue using HTC Vive with game version 0. It’s almost like it sends the input twice, connecting and then disconnecting the object. I can’t confirm it in my environment, but I fixed the code that seems to be the cause in v0.

If it is going to cost money how mutch? Are you going to add multiplayer in the future? I can’t wait to play on a server and there are massive buildings that people have build. There are no plans to add multiplayer as it is technically difficult. lissydev 1 year ago.
