Then, since here it says:. I installed Windows Server standard in hyper-v using the dvd media install that was given to me with the server. I used the product key written on the COA sticker on the case.
because it is already running on the host? So the OEM version doesn’t have virtualization rights? I activated the first time automatically and a week later when i reinstalled on the same hardware, so it shouldn’t count.
AVMA only works when the Datacenter version is your hypervisor, so it makes sense that that would fail. It’s not an option in your case. The Standard version OEM, Retail, or VL does give you 2 OSEs, no question about that. Which hypervisor did you use? If you use Windows Standard and install the hyper-v role and NO OTHER roles, you can then have 2 VMs of Standard.
If you install other roles, you can then have 1 VM of Standard. Either way, the key you have should allow you to activate. Could you be having issues reaching the MS activation servers? Okay, with that setup you get the hyperisor as one OSE and the VM as your second OSE. You are not licensed for any other VMs. Does the VM have access to Internet? FYI – you would almost certainly be better off removing the File Server role from the hypervisor and leaving that as hypervisor only.
Then spin up a second VM and set that up as your File Server. When I take out a role, it will contact the microsoft activation servers and “free up a slot”?
I installed windows server and I enabled all the roles to see how it works i am a newbie. Windows activated by iself without my command i typed the product key during first install. Then I discovered that enabling AD will disable disk cache and will slow down the server too much. Again, activation is not the same as a license. You can activate many times without issue. MS knows people reinstall for various reasons. I’m not sure why you are having trouble with the VM.
You didn’t answer my previous question – does the VM have Internet access? Can it reach the MS activation servers? i tried with a VM in server core can i legally use that? I am confused between core and nano and with a VM in server desktop experience. If your VM can reach the MS Servers but keeps getting errors, you can select the ‘call’ option and dial in. It’s an automated system and should walk you through activation. I ask just for clarity, your profile says you’ve been in IT 11 years so I am just looking to see where you are a newbie, it helps us provide better responses.
How many times did you successfully activate already? OEM and Retail licenses have a much lower limit than VL licences and if you hit the limit, you’ll have to call to activate. You used the media that came with the server? Did the install give you a choice of Standard or Datacenter and did you choose Standard?
Microsoft sure does like to keep people on their toes with audits. I don’t ever have the host do anything but be a host many instances the host is Hyper-V Server though we are very heavy in VMware. When using another hypervisor including the free Hyper-v Server , there’s nothing to worry about.
It’s only when you install Windows Server, then install the hyper-v role, that you need be slightly cautious. You get two OSEs with Standard. If you ONLY add the hyper-v role and use that Server just for hyper-v management, it doesn’t use up an OSE.
But if you do anything else with it, MS considers it use of an OSE so you only get one more. This is one of the many reasons that people say it’s better to use the free Hyper-v Server instead. Right, but the thing I found most interesting is that you can install Windows and it doesn’t count. Even if it is just to manage Hyper-V, the fact that it doesn’t count is interesting.
I assumed it did since Windows is installed. Brand Representative for Trusted Tech Team. OP – Is there any update? Do you need any other additional help?
i was able to activate the vm but i discovered that the license i got allowed only two activations, either because the system builder is incompetent or either wanted to scam me a thousand euro. turns out the coa on the case says “windows server std 2c2vm” which is an additional license for extra 2 cores or 2 vm right? and sells much much cheaper. the system builder said this is an honest mistake, got confused because on the envelope it said “2 cpu” but not 16 cores.
I only buy VL for Server, so I’m not familiar with the newer OEM licensing labels. I have no idea what that means. Can you post the part number from the sticker?
Additional core licenses don’t come with product keys. That’s the proper part number for a core OEM license of Server Standard. The 2C stands for 2 CPU’s. And there’s no reason for there to be a limit of 2 activations. Something else is going on here. Actually I’m not sure what that is.
I did a quick Google and saw a bunch of hits but when I look closer, most of the sites are either ebay, or questionable. they couldn’t tell me more though as the guy was from the consumer activation department. Told me to call support for open value or something like that, but we are small and don’t have a contact for that. Open VL is perfect for small companies. The min requirement is 5, but as long as you need a few CALs you can hit that number very easily. I have no idea what they meant by that.
OEM is only allowed to be used on the one physical box, so that’s single use, maybe? Brand Representative for Microsoft. MGADiag might help here, not sure if you can get it to run on core but do give it a try and report back what it says.

It works, activated and all. Then, since here it says: “Standard Edition provides rights for up to 2 Operating System Environments or Windows Servers containers with Hyper-V isolation when all physical cores inthe server are licensed. When I activate it, I get the error: 0xcc the activation server determined that the specified product key could not be used because it is already running on the host?
