Experts Pick No. 16 BYU vs Notre Dame – BYU Cougars on Sports Illustrated: News, Analysis, and More – The last time these two teams met, Notre Dame OC Tommy Reese was playing QB for the Fighting Irish

After averaging less than 20 points per game in their first three outings, the Fighting Irish broke out for 45 points in their most recent contest vs North Carolina. Sophomore running back Audric Estime did most of the damage for the Irish, running for a career-high yards and two touchdowns on just 17 carries, while backup quarterback Drew Pyne added yards and three touchdowns through the air. BYU always has a chance with Hall under center, and their star quarterback should be able to put up solid numbers once again against a Notre Dame defense that has looked average so far.

Notre Dame also tends to bring its best when facing tougher competition, going SU and ATS in its last 10 against teams with winning records. Notre Dame, on the other hand, is coming off a bye after the Fighting Irish offense put forth its best game of the season: a win in Week 4 in Chapel Hill over then-undefeated North Carolina.

Of the remaining six meetings, Notre Dame claimed wins in the first two , while the Cougars and Fighting Irish have alternated victories in the next four. The Cougars most recently came out on top in a win in Provo in , while the Fighting Irish bounced back the very next year by cruising to a win at Notre Dame Stadium in This is not only the first neutral-site matchup between the two programs, but it’s also the first time that BYU is the only ranked team.

Notre Dame has been unranked for three of the encounters, going with one of the wins being vacated in the eyes of the NCAA in those matchups. Kickoff: Saturday, Oct. The Cougars entered halftime of last week’s game against Utah State tied at 17 but survived that slow start and came away victorious by outscoring the Aggies in the second half, including a third-quarter edge. Quarterback Jaren Hall leads a top passing offense that averages The Cougars’ pair of point scoring outputs have certainly signaled prime operations for Hall, who threw for yards and four touchdowns against Wyoming before adding yards and three more touchdowns on Thursday.

Hall was quite balanced in the passing game against Wyoming, finding eight different receivers with seven of the eight tallying more than one catch. In fact, at least eight Cougars up to 12 against South Florida have caught at least one pass in all but one game this season, with last week’s win over Utah State seven different pass-catchers the lone exception.

It was Keanu Hill who led the way with yards and a pair of touchdowns on five catches against the Cowboys, while he managed just two catches for 46 yards and a score against Utah State. Leading the way against the Aggies was Kody Epps, who notched a team-high five catches for 86 yards and a touchdown, his first time pacing the team in yards after fellow freshman Chase Roberts had led the team in the first three games of the season.

BYU’s running game, however, has not been balanced. The Cougars are middle-of-the-pack nationally with Inconsistent start: Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman became the first coach in program history to lose his first three games. Wins over Cal and North Carolina are encouraging, but it’s unclear what’s sustainable. Every game has looked slightly different, especially after QB Drew Pyne replaced the injured Ty Buchner in the starting lineup.

With such inconsistency, Notre Dame still hasn’t found a program identity. Disappointing middle: BYU moved all the way up to No. Quarterback Jaren Hall has been consistently excellent with 1, yards passing, 12 touchdowns and only one interception, but the running game has dried up with receivers falling in and out of the lineup.

Playing Notre Dame is a major opportunity to get right on a national stage. Even as the offense has struggled, Notre Dame has stayed consistent defensively behind the leadership of star defensive end Isaiah Foskey , a future NFL player. On BYU’s side, 15 players have at least one tackle for loss. Linebacker Ben Bywater has been incredibly disruptive with two tackles for loss, two pick sixes and a pass defended. Points will come at a premium, and both teams might have to try and go over the top to generate offense.
