I had studied the imagery of this model and was greatly intrigued. I have visited the actual ship and built models of it in my younger days. I have always thought this class of ship was really neat. There are pluses and minuses here. The pluses outweigh the minuses. The detailing is exquisite, but the information is flawed. The configuration is that of the ship as it would have appeared in or 45, not as stated in the packaging.
I already was aware that the national flag was placed backwards, so this was not a major issue in my decision to buy the model. The only other flaw was the fact that a part was missing. That part is the secondary gun director that should be just forward of the Number Three inch gun turret on the aft superstructure. Otherwise, this is a superb model. Does anyone know how I can get the missing part? Otherwise, I will try to improvise something. Excellent detail, looks great on display.
Other ships in this series are pretty great, but they really screwed up the Massachusetts for some reason. I bought two, both of which had loose parts, and a superstructure which leans starboard. One was bad enough that I had to return it.
Came in good condition and was exactly what I was looking for. Most excellent. The item was quality. The American Flag was backwards, I switched it. It was a little annoying. I’d hope these items would be Made in America. I love it! I’m glad that it is one of the first pieces in my collection! Very good quality! This a good product for your collection!!! Very detailed. Following the Japanese surrender on 15 August, Massachusetts departed the region on 1 September, bound for Puget Sound for an overhaul. The work lasted until 28 January , when she sailed south to San Francisco , California before proceeding on to Hampton Roads , Virginia, which she reached on 22 April.
Plans were drawn up during the period she was in reserve to modernize Massachusetts and the other ships of her class should they be needed for future active service.
In March , a program to equip the four ships with secondary batteries consisting of ten twin 3-inch 76 mm guns were proposed, but the plan came to nothing. Another plan to convert the ship into a guided missile battleship arose in —, but the cost of the conversion proved to be prohibitive.
She would have had all three main battery turrets removed and replaced with a twin RIM-8 Talos missile launcher forward, two RIM Tartar launchers aft, anti-submarine weapons, and equipment to handle helicopters. After Massachusetts was stricken and slated for disposal, a group of her former crew lobbied to have the battleship preserved as a museum ship. The Massachusetts Memorial Committee successfully raised enough money to purchase the vessel from the Navy, including through a donation campaign for children in the state, and on 8 June , the Navy transferred ownership of the vessel to the state.
The museum also includes the destroyer Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. In the early s, when the Navy reactivated the four Iowa -class battleships , parts were cannibalized from preserved battleships, including Massachusetts , to restore the Iowa s to service. Engine room components that were no longer available in the Navy’s inventory accounted for most of the material removed from the ships. In November , Massachusetts was closed to the public in advance of her planned departure for Boston, where she was scheduled to undergo an overhaul.
She departed on her mile km trip to the capital at 4 November with a tug boat moving her under the Braga, Mt. Hope and Newport Bridges, then up the coast to Boston. She arrived 7 November and entered Boston’s Drydock Number 3, where an inspection determined the battleship was in need of additional steel plating along her hull at the water line to protect against sea water corrosion. In addition, the survey also located leaking rivets and identified a need to remove two of the battleship’s propellers for repair purposes.
For the next four months Massachusetts underwent repairs to correct these problems, including the addition of nearly , pounds , kg of steel to her hull and the addition of a compound known as Red Hand Epoxy to encase and protect the hull against further deterioration. In March Massachusetts emerged from her dry docking period and returned under tow to Battleship Cove, arriving at her berth at 13 March to a crowd of citizens, dignitaries, veterans, and civic officials.

Please note the Mk. In this earlier modification three telescopes had been fitted for the trainer, pointer and control officer. The function of the slewing sight was to bring the director telescopes on the rangefinder to bear on a new target in train and elevation in a minimum of time.
The equipment was supported at the top of the director shield just forward of the control officer’s hatch. The sighting unit mounted on the motor unit projected through an opening in the shield. The motor unit itself was secured within the director shield. After opening the hatch, the operator grasped the handles and slewed the sight bar relative to the director until the bar lined up with target and he closed the “SLEW”switch on the handle.
As the introduced train and elevation relative to the director, two potentiometer’s movable arms were offset in the motor and caused the train and elevation follow-up motors in the motor unit to be energized.
