Most of us support reforms that would provide a more humane living environment for these animals. In addition, as a veterinarian, I know there is solid scientific evidence supporting such reforms — science demonstrating that freedom of movement and the expression of natural behavior are necessary prerequisites for an acceptable quality of life.

Alternatives to these extreme confinement methods already exist, are in widespread commercial use and are economically viable. As Massachusetts residents, we have an opportunity to take a stand in support of more humane housing by supporting an upcoming ballot measure, the Prevention of Farm Animal Cruelty Act, which will require that pigs, calves and hens simply have room to stand up, turn around, and stretch their limbs. Matt Bershadker , president and chief executive of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, said, [12].

Paul Shapiro , vice president of farm animal protection at the Humane Society, said food prices could rise a little, but not by much. He argued: [16]. Chad Gregory argued, [12].

Rich Bonanno said, [12]. Peter Diemand , owner of the Wendell family farm, said, [21]. Daniel Fishman , United Independent Party candidate for state representative, said, [17].

Jayson Lusk , agricultural economics professor at Oklahoma State University, said, [22]. Poor Americans, who spend a larger share of their incomes on food, are disproportionately affected. The National Association of Egg Farmers wants the people in Massachusetts to know that it has been more than five decades since the modern system of producing eggs ensures that chickens have better health, produce more grade-A eggs, and prevents contamination of the eggs with dirt and manure on the ground.

Chickens establish a pecking order among them, so reducing the number of birds in an enclosure such as the modern cages reduces the stress from pecking.

If this voter initiative passes in Massachusetts, it will be repeating the same mistakes in California when their initiative became law in Without improving the health and welfare of the chicken, egg prices rose more than a dollar per dozen after the law’s implementation. Don’t be misled by those putting forth this initiative who are intentionally trying to misinform, and who really don’t want you to eat eggs anyway.

Ask the farmer who provides the best care for his chickens because he wants to keep his chickens producing quality eggs at a price families can afford. Sally Smith , a member of Groton Agricultural Commission and owner of Common View Farm, wrote the following in a letter to the editor: [23]. Right now, our farms are overseen by the following organizations: U. Dairy Administration, Mass. But, most importantly, they are overseen by you, the consumer.

Please stand with, and trust your farmer. Please, vote no on Question 3. In this case, we don’t believe the end justifies the means.

The buying public — and its influence in the marketplace — has already announced a preference for free-range farm produce, many of which are already available today. And as this societal demand continues to grow, so will the variety of products, creating more competition and lower prices.

And since this law wouldn’t take effect until , that leaves ample time for this market transition to occur. That’s preferable to another layer of bureaucracy, which is why we can’t support Question 3. Share this page Follow Ballotpedia. Subscribe Donate. Subscribe Subscribe. Creates a new fermented malt beverage and wine retailer license to allow grocery stores, convenience stores, and other businesses that are licensed to sell beer to also sell wine and conduct wine tastings.

In , it got one. I n full effect as of January 1, , Question 3—also known as An Act to Prevent Cruelty to Farm Animals—outlaws the cruelest uses of cages within the animal agriculture industry. Bolstered by Senate Bill , which Governor Charlie Baker signed into law in late , Question 3 stands to free millions of animals from the worst forms of confinement on factory farms.

Question 3 also protects caged animals raised out-of-state when the eggs, pork, and veal from those animals are sold within the Commonwealth. In other words, Question 3 aims to put an end to the cruel confinement of animals within—and beyond—the borders of Massachusetts. Packed neatly into the styrofoam, cardboard, or plastic cartons that line the refrigerated shelves of grocery stores and supermarkets across the nation, eggs are a staple for millions of American households.

And demand is high. But the plight of the hens who lay these eggs is extreme. These small crates, often made entirely out of wire, are designed to maximize the number of birds that can fit on a sunless warehouse floor. No bigger than a bathtub, and often the size of a filing cabinet drawer, each battery cage can hold between four and ten birds at a time.

Each hen has less than a single square foot of space to herself. Her feathers fall off due to the constant chafing, and the brittleness of her bones—weakened by her non-stop egg production—makes it easier for her to break her ankles on the bare mesh floors that catch her eggs. In the wild, chickens would naturally lay just 12 eggs a year. But layer hens on factory farms lay close to , which takes a painful toll on their health.

Mother pigs do too. Of the 6. As for their newborns, each one is destined for either slaughter—to become pork—or the same intensive confinement as another breeding sow. Baby calves raised for veal also endure inhumane confinement on factory farms.

Question 3 massachusetts. Build a custom email digest by following topics, people, and firms published on JD Supra.

Question 3, a Massachusetts anti-trans measure on the November ballot, asks if voters want to keep those protections in place. The question is only on the ballot because of a group of people opposed to the very existence of trans individuals. Massachusetts has had strong LGBTQ protections since , when the governor and a bipartisan supermajority passed one of the best nondiscrimination laws in the country.

Since then, the law has caused zero problems, and has in fact protected vulnerable citizens — particularly youth. Nevertheless, misinformation has been flying. No, businesses will not be required to retrofit their bathrooms to accommodate trans people. They pee like everyone else. And despite claims to the contrary, no, trans protections do not make it easier for harassers to enter locker rooms. Now that they want to be protected from abuse, suddenly anti-LGBTQ extremists have decided that the future of civilization depends on withholding bathroom access from queer people.

A recent survey showed that more than half of trans citizens have been harassed in a bathroom.
