Similar to the client Windows editions , Windows Server is also offered in various editions. Windows Server is an operating system designed to manage and control the networking infrastructure around it. Each edition is designed for a different audience, providing them with a unique set of tools and features to manage their environment more effectively. Furthermore, they are designed for organizations of different sizes. Similar to the client operating system, server editions depend on the type of license one uses.<\/p>\n

This means that one can later upgrade their Server edition by changing the licensing key. In this post, we are going to discuss all the different Windows Server editions Microsoft offers of the different Server versions.<\/p>\n

Before we dive into the details of the various editions, let us briefly differentiate between the Server version and the editions. These are the different editions a Windows Server can be offered in. However, some or all of these editions can be offered in the various Server versions which are denoted by the suffixed year they were released e.<\/p>\n

That said, a complete Server name would be something like this, consisting of both the version as well as its edition:.<\/p>\n

You can check your Server details by typing in winver in the Run Command box. Server editions can be classified as retail or volume licenses. As the name suggests, a retail license can only be used on a single PC, while a volume license is designed for organizations that require running a server on more than one instance.<\/p>\n

Moreover, you can also use a free-of-cost license categorized as an evaluation license. However, these are only valid for a limited time, after which the Server installation will no longer be functional. Note: There was no concept of the different Server editions before Server This means it is offered in 3 different editions: Plain, Advanced, and Datacenter. The table below highlights the major differences and similarities between the Standard and the Datacenter editions of Windows Server:.<\/p>\n

The Standard edition of the Server is based on Client Access License CAL requirements, which is a commercial software license that allows multiple client computers to use server software services. The Standard edition includes all of the features in the Essentials edition and more. In case of more Virtual Machines VMs , you will need to purchase more licenses. What about the Windows Server license: The Windows Server licenses are based on the physical processor A single license covers two physical processors.<\/p>\n

There are two license editions available: Windows Server Standard edition. A Standard edition license will entitle you to run up to two VMs on up to two processors.<\/p>\n

Windows Server Datacenter edition. A Datacenter edition license will entitle you to run an unlimited number of VMs on up to two processors The only difference between the two editions are the virtualization rights. There are some expectations of the 90 days rule to assign the license sooner for example: When having a permanent hardware failure Reallocate processors from one host to another What about moving a VM?<\/p>\n

For example, it is possible to run Essential edition of Server as virtual machine utilizing one of two available virtual instances in Standard edition as shown in the figure below.<\/p>\n

This eliminates the needs to purchase Essential edition of Server Download Now! Unlike Windows Server Essentials non-R2 , you can now run a single instance of a virtual machine. The server licensing rights have been expanded, allowing you to install an instance of Essentials on your physical server to run the Hyper-V role with none of the other roles and features of the Essentials Experience installed , and a second instance of Essentials as a virtual machine VM on that same server with all the Essentials Experience roles and features.<\/p>\n

Definition of a socket is a CPU or physical processor. Logical cores are not counted as sockets. A single license of Standard and Datacenter edition covers up to two physical processors per physical server. Standard edition allows up to 2 virtual instances while the Datacenter edition allows unlimited number of virtual instances.<\/p>\n

For example, a Windows Server R2 Standard edition installed on a physical server with one socket CPU can support up to two instances of virtual machines. These virtual machines can be Server R2 Standard or Essentials edition. Similarly, if you install a Windows Server R2 Datacenter edition , then you can install an unlimited number of virtual machines.<\/p>\n

Scenario 2 : Install Server Standard Edition on a physical server with 1 physical processor, running 8 instances of virtual machines. A total of 50 users will be accessing the server. Remember that a single Standard edition license covers up to two physical processors and up to two instances of virtual machines. Since the requirement is to run 8 instances of virtual machines, we need four Standard edition licenses.<\/p>\n

If we decided to use the Datacenter edition in this scenario, a single license with 50 CAL would be enough to cover our needs, because the Datacenter edition license supports an unlimited number of virtual instances and up to two physical processors.<\/p>\n

Once the transition to Windows Server is complete, organizations will be able to simplify their Windows edition strategy in favor of far fewer options. Personally, I believe that Microsoft has taken a great step forward by simplifying their editions structures and that they are being relatively generous with regard to the opportunity for organizations to move away from now-discontinued editions to current ones.<\/p>\n
